Paints au naturale
Part 1: New generation coatings blend smoothly with their environment
Low-odor, emission free oil-based paint line
An old-fashioned paint contractor would always prefer an oil-based paint over a latex; they liked the way it flowed off the brush, penetrated into the substrate, and formed a smooth sheen without visible brush strokes. But traditional alkyd/oil paints have been largely phased out because they required a high level of VOC-emitting solvents.
The AFM Safecoat Naturals line represents a new generation of paint technology based on natural plant oils. It is extremely low-VOC, water reducible, biodegradeable, and virtually odor free. "What sets Naturals apart is that we've incorporated phytochemistry, the science of plants, to formulate a premium coating... while emitting no toxins and leaving no trace," says AFM's Jay Watts.
Rather than using synthetic resins, the paints are formulated from a blend of natural oils without the use of toxic solvents or additives that might prove unhealthy to chemically sensitive people. The line has earned the SCS Indoor Advantage label, and qualifies for credits under the LEED and NAHBGreen standards.
Naturals is available in flat and pearl finish for interiors and exteriors, plus a high-performance primer. These paints can be applied by brush, roller, or sprayer, and accept a full spectrum of VOC-free colors.
Color of the year: 2009
It's hard to argue color with Pantone, the global provider of standards for the design industries. So when they announced PANTONE® 14-0848 Mimosa as the color of the year for 2009, it's worth a closer look. According to Pantone, Mimosa is a versatile nature-derived shade that coordinates well with other colors, has appeal for men and women, and translates to both fashion and interiors. Mimosa is also one of 3,000 colors available in the Pantone line of premium low-emission paints; their proprietary tinting system is designed to produce a high level of accuracy and covering power.
Full spectrum VOC-free paint line

It dries fast, is virtually odorless, and it is highly washable within days after it's been applied. The line includes a primer plus three sheens--flat, eggshell, and semi-gloss. Offered in quarts and gallons, the MSRP for Natura is $49.99 a gallon.
